This is me. In the World.

Two years ago, while traveling in Spain, I was set straight by a dear friend regarding something I clung to in order to establish my identity. As is common when traveling, I was often asked where I was from, and I always responded, "New York" as that had been my last stopping point. On a hot afternoon in Sevilla, my friend overheard this exchange and set me straight: "YOU are not FROM New York. (I'm not?) "People like you are OF the world, you are not FROM New York. Whatever you do, wherever you go, the world is your home...no matter where you have been or where you are going, you will always be of the world. Paige del Mundo. Sounds much better don't you think?" I thought it sounded cartoon-characterish, but I knew his idea was right. Exploring the world - locally or faraway - has always been my passion. So here is the story of Paige del Mundo. Paige of the World. These are my pages written while being in the world. I hope you will enjoy reading as much as I enjoy telling my story.

You must climb the mountain.... IF you want to get to happy hour!

After our visit to St. Peters and Vatican City, we went in search of happy hour. (Well, Sue and I did, Johanna thought happy hour should start ASAP).

We were headed to 'the village' part of Rome, where the buildings are smaller, the sky bluer and the crowds a bit more thin... or so we hoped! These two girls were trusting me as their tour guide (not sure how I got chosen for this...maybe because I had the map!) and we were off.

I will be the first to admit, that I walk too much in cities... especially on nice days. Why take a taxi or subway when you can walk and get fresh air and sunshine? I was notorious for this practice in NYC, sometimes putting over 10 miles a day walking all over Manhattan. Here in Rome, it was to be no different. Already today we had logged 5+ miles on Johanna's pedometer, and we were less than halfway through our journey!

From St. Peter's we took a hard right and probably walked a good 2 miles straight up hill, where we found the Spanish embassy (go figure!) and a beautiful old fountain, not to mention an awesome view of the rooftops of Rome. We had walked along a scary highway to get this far (funny how some things are marked on the map...), and after reaching the top of the hill, what did the map have us do? Follow a path straight downhill! Couldn't this whole uphill/downhill thing been evened out?

After many twists and turns we found Travastere, and with our feet all propped up we enjoyed out first sips of Compari and soda. How refreshing after our long, hot, uphill hike... Such a treat!
